The news came out on Wednesday, 19 May 2010 that Orchard MRT station was to be one of the alleged target of a slain terrorist. The terrorist group had intended to enter Singapore through Malaysia, with RM11,517 (S$4,980).
There and then, many were shocked, overwhelmed, shaken, stunned, dazed, appalled, bowled over by such a news. Who could have thought that peaceful and powerful Singapore could be a terrorist target? Wait, one such plot did took place 9 years ago at target; Yishun MRT station isn’t it?
While many of us will just brush the bomb scare off, and dismiss those videos about terrorist attacks on the TV screens in the MRT stations as redundant, thinking “Our defense is impeccable! They will never be able to ‘bomb’ us!” That was what we all believed just before Japan invaded our country in 1942.
We might be safe now, but we must never be complacent and take for granted the peace that is currently residing in Singapore. We all have a part to play in preventing any such mishap from occurring simply by being viligant, making sure nobody does any funny business to our MRT stations, our airport, our bus interchanges and other important infrastructures. As the saying goes, ‘Prevention is better than cure.’ Lets not wait till a possible tragedy to occur before we lament and regret for not being more viligant.
